Carmel Valley’s story stretches back thousands of years. Native American Kumeyaay peoples inhabited the area as far back as 7,000 years ago, living near the San Dieguito River corridor along what is now El Camino Real.
The community’s name has a gentler origin than most people expect. In the early 1900s, the Catholic Sisters of Mercy established a monastery and dairy farm in the lower canyon. The Sisters had named a nearby hill Mount Carmel after a biblical site near Jerusalem, and over time that name attached itself to the valley below.
The modern planned community took shape more recently. Originally called North City West by the San Diego City Council, the community was formally established in February 1975 and later renamed Carmel Valley in the early 1990s. From its earliest days, the vision for the community was intentional and forward-thinking. Carmel Valley was designed as a master planned community and became a model for other planned communities in San Diego, with parks, recreation areas, and an extensive system of walking, running, and biking trails woven into its design.
