We are a non-mercury practice. Many people, however, still have silver/mercury fillings in their mouths from years ago. These fillings are not particularly appealing cosmetically, and we know that silver/mercury fillings must result in weakened tooth structure. Porcelain inlays and Tooth Colored Restorations (onlays) create fillings that are not only aesthetically pleasing (or undetectable), but also reinforce weakening teeth. Silver fillings, on the other hand, have several drawbacks. The silver filling’s edges can simply wear away, become weak, or even break. As a result, the tooth is left unprotected, allowing cavities to form once more. As you age, the metal of the silver filling contracts and can split.
Silver fillings are made up of 50% mercury. They can corrode, leak, and discolor your teeth and gums.

Silver fillings can be replaced with tooth-colored restorations (onlays). This procedure necessitates two appointments.
- Your First Appointment:
- The existing filling, as well as any additional decay, is removed.
- An impression is made of your teeth. A model of your teeth is developed and sent to the lab.
- A temporary onlay is placed on the tooth.
In the lab, a resin is carefully inserted into a model of your teeth. It is then styled to appear natural.
- Your Second Appointment:
- The temporary onlay is removed.
- To prepare your tooth for the new onlay, a conditioning gel is applied to it.
- A high-intensity light is used to attach the resin to the tooth after bonding cement is applied to the tooth.
- The tooth is then polished.
